What’s It Like Being a Black Teacher in America?
Education is extremely important. Is the lack of Black teachers in America effecting the Black Youth?
When discussing amongst our podcast co-hosts, it came to our attention that most of us didn’t really have any Black teachers during our time in school. We can’t help but wonder if our teenage years would have been different with them.
Memories of teacher offer go back to being uncomfortable in History class when white teacher attempted to justify slavery was ok or allowing students to say bogus things about Affirmative Action. In current times, we see stories in the news about teachers dressing up like the border wall for Halloween.
Research shows that students, especially boys, benefit when teachers share their race or gender. Yet most teachers are white women, making it hard for black students, especially Black men to relate and excel. Over all, girls outperform boys, and white students outperform those who are Black and Hispanic.
The teaching force is still 80 percent white. According to the New York Times, when Black children had a Black teacher between third and fifth grade, boys were significantly less likely to later drop out of high school, and both boys and girls were more likely to attend college.
We wanted to hear from our Black teacher so we invited Jasmine Price to the show, a teacher in Syracuse city school district and adjunct professor at SUNY Oswego teaching the foundations of education. Jasmine answers the question if teachers should be in students live and should they step in regarding problems and discussions about race? We discuss whether there should be background checks on teachers or required diversity training and suggestions for white teachers who have black students. Jasmine ends the episode explaining how we can make the teaching field more diverse and shares her personal stories of teaching that will blow you away and also give you a good laugh!
