What Happens When You Find Success Early on In Your Career?
We are often conditioned to think our journey to success needs to be filled with obstacles and overcoming hard times. But what if it doesn’t?
America loves a success story, a story about the underdog coming up on top or someone with very little making a name for themselves. Many times we think whoever is successful and doesn’t have that story of struggle is almost less successful and less impressive. Our society conditions us that struggling to the top is normal and the common path to get what we want.
Success looks different for all of us. What one person thinks success looks like might be the opposite for someone else. After all, Maya Angelou did say, “success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” Some of us might have luck and an easier time getting to where we want to go. Others might have privilege and/or wealth that make the road a little smoother. And some of us have bigger goals than others.
We don’t always talk about the times where we consider ourselves successful early on in our careers. That’s why So-Called Oreos decided to interview Brianna Pollard, the Global HR Reporting Lead at Otis Elevators. Brianna has been a part of the soon-to-be former UTC conglomerate since she was an undergraduate student at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations and has managed to climb her way up from intern to her current position. She was still working for the company while working toward her MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Millennials are known to switch jobs often but Briana was able to grow into her current role during 8 years with he same company. She speaks on the podcast about finding success early on in her career, avoiding burnout and saying yes within reason and setting boundaries for yourself. Brianna also touches on the challenges of being in a leadership role as a Black woman in corporate America as well as the complicating reality of how life situations change the way you set goals for the future.
