When you think of the word “soulmate,” what comes to mind? Is it a romantic interest that is more intense than anything you have ever experienced? Is it someone you have been waiting for to get married?

It is common to think we only have romantic soulmates but our life and our soul is attached to so much more outside of romantic connections. It is believed that we have at least four type of soulmates that we could meet in a lifetime.

  1. Friend Soulmate — You feel the most “at home” with this person and you can share anything with them. You can be far apart and still have a connection.
  2. Companion Soulmate — This person can feel romantic in nature or can be platonic. Companion souls are in harmony and on the same wavelength. This is what most people understand when they think of the word “soulmate.”
  3. Teacher Soulmate — They reflect back to you why you need to see and often show up in your life during a time of transition.
  4. Twin Flame Soulmate — According to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves — their twin souls. When twin souls find each other, there is an unspoken understanding of one another — they feel unified and feel an inexplicable joy. This person typically has all the characteristics of the other soulmates but you experience the ultimate connection on the deepest level possible that you could ever have with someone. This soulmate is rare and extremely lucky.

Even if we haven’t found our twin flame or companion soulmate yet, it’s very possible that we have already experienced a teacher soulmate or a friend soulmate. If we are too wrapped up in finding a certain soulmate, we might not realize or appreciate the soulmates that we currently have. If we pay more attention to all of our possible soulmates, our souls might feel more nourished.

It’s also important to remember that soulmates can be temporary. For example, if someone entered your life during a rough time, once that time is over you might feel less connected because their intention was to be a teacher soulmate for you. That’s not to say another teacher soulmate might enter your life later on.

It is human nature to be comfortable and so many of us find ourselves settling. If you really want to hold out for finding your companion soulmate (and if you are lucky enough to meet your twin flam) then I believe it is possible for you to find them and you don’t have to settle if you want that passion and connection.

People can end up with an earth mate but do you want to take it to another step and have a soulmate? — Kia Swinton on So-Called Oreos

In this episode, the So-Called Oreos go into detail about the four types of soulmates we encounter in our lifetime. The women attempt to describe the indescribable feeling of what separates the relationship with a soulmate verses relationships with everyone else. They discuss how the amount of time knowing someone can contribute to finding your soulmate, how soulmates are temporary, how you can have more than one and how some people block themselves from finding soulmates.
